Quizmaster

It's the most popular forum game about most popular answers! We're back in time for Christmas 2017 and a Happy New Year 2018.

The Quizmaster account is always run by a normal forum member; it's merely to keep game-related private messages sorted apart from normal private messages.

How to play

  • Anybody may play! Freely drop in and out after each round.
  • Look near the end of the thread for the most recent round.
  • Try to answer each question with the most popular answer given among all players. For example, if the quizmaster asks "Name a pet", what do you think most players would say? Dog? Cat? Capybara? Answer with what you deem most popular.
  • Send your answers to the Quizmaster by private forum message.
  • As long as the Quizmaster hasn't scored the round, you may change your answers by sending another private message with a new complete set of answers.
  • After 5-7 days, the Quizmaster will reveal and score everybody's answers. Until then, please don't discuss your secret answers.
Scoring

For each answer, you get (number of people that gave your answer) / (number of people that gave the most popular answer). Example for "Name a pet" with 14 players:

5 players said "capybara": worth 5/5 points = 1 full point.
5 players said "cat": worth 5/5 points = 1 full point.
3 players said "dog": worth 3/5 points, a fractional value.
1 player said "ant": worth only 1/5 points.

Subclass rule: When all As are Bs, but not all Bs are As, then A and B are entirely separate answers. E.g., "oak" and "tree" are separate answers. It's part of the game to decide how specific you want to be. But synonyms are lumped together as one answer.

Your scores are tallied across all questions for the round. Highest total wins!

I also hope to see the "Pointless" variant where the least popular answer wins. Those are fun due to the next level of tactical thinking required!

Erkki-Pekka and DeadOnArrival are Akseli's siblings, they don't have accounts on the forum. This has to be the feud with the most entries of all time on Lemmings Forums!

Thanks for participating everybody! Congrats to bsmith for the win, and don't fret if you aren't near the top.

Who would like to host the next game? bsmith has first dibs, otherwise just post if you're interested. I have a spreadsheet and a Python script to help score the feud.

Synonyms

Sweater/Jumper was an easy merge, both are a long-sleeved pullover.

Cookies/Biscuits suffers from American English vs. British English ambiguities. I've merged them because of this google hit: "In the US, a cookie covers both what the British would call a biscuit and a cookie." This merge was substantial for the rankings.

A Graham cracker seems to be a certain type of American cookie, but it's really so close to the British biscuit that I've lumped it together with Cookies/Biscuits. This merge had no effect on the rankings whatsoever.

Doctors/paramedics/E.R. doctors are merged three-way because most doctors active during the holidays are indeed the emergency doctors. The paramedics are extremely close to this, even though they aren't doctor proper.

Nurses and the emergency telephone dudes are different enough from those three that I didn't merge either the nurse or the dude with anything.

Wow looks like a lot of participants for this one. I think you are right Simon that must be a record.  Welldone to Bsmith for winning that one, that will have to be an extra special win for bsmith especially with the amount of players.

I like how a lot of people mentioned lemmings for the hard computer game section. It was one of those games that gives you a great sense of achievement once you complete it for the first time.

I quite like a lot of the christmas songs that got mentioned.

Oh I wonder how it would of scored if someone said Jaffa cake for the ( Name what goes well with coffee or hot chocoloate). There was a whole argument that took place with people saying that's not a biscuit and others were saying that is a biscuit. I don't want to get people started on this one.

bsmith

I won! :lem-mindblown: Yay!  Really good set of questions, most questions had multiple 'obvious' answers so guessing was tricky.  I actually thought of people in my family that fit the questions and answered accordingly; for example, one of my cousins is a RN so I answered Nurse for question 10.

I would like to host the next game.  I can have set ready tomorrow.

Thanks for the round! I mulled over several answers before submitting.

I'd give grams88 first dips since I've already hosted last time. Otherwise, anybody may step forward.

Salt (0.17 pt)

The feud has a unique way of handling tricky questions. Sometimes, the extremely general "boat" is excellent, my hunch was that "boat" was far too general, it captures almost any watercraft larger than a raft. But with the salt, you have to be specific again.

I've attached a spreadsheet for feud evaluation. I should have really done this earlier, maybe bsmith would have liked to use it, too. >_>

If you have Python installed, you can export the spreadsheet to a.csv and run the Python script in the same directory. The script prints to standard output a readily-formatted post.

Oh cool a tie, I might pass the rod to Simon on this one, if Simon wants to host another one or someone else would like to host. That was an interesting one. Actually the boat answer seemed to work out not bad, I noticed many people were giving different answers to that one, it seemed like the general answer worked out not bad there.:thumbsup:

Simon

Who would like to host? grams and I would like to pass for now. You can use the spreadsheet, but don't have to; you can always score manually.
