Skin colors irrelevant to Lemmings

I probably should've mentioned this when this new forum started. But anyway...

The colors selected for the skin on the forum as mentioned above is quite irrelevant. It's still quite an interesting and agreeable combination, combining a Slate gray and White gradient in the background with orange icons and text for selected tabs and board links respectively, but for me personally my preference is to replace the Slate gray with Blue and the Orange with Green. (Or vice versa, if you don't want it to look like the 2009 forum. :P)

This feature may be controversial, and thus is probably going to appear in the Look and Layout settings in the Forum Profile; but it'd be interesting to see what it will look like. Thanks.

What you currently see is the default theme of the forum software (SMF 2.0) I believe.

I see where in the admin area the changes can be made (to be offered as a user option of course), but namida is probably better equipped to handle this (if he so chooses of course) as he has admin access to the old forum, and if you're referring to a theme that looks (color-wise) like the old forum's, maybe he can do it more easily by copying the theme-related files from the old forum rather than cloning and editing the existing files here.

It's doable if there's enough interest. I'll keep an eye on this topic.

Might as well revive this old thread again, as there's considerable activity on these forums as of late, and with plenty of newer active users around too. :lemcat:

So, as I mentioned earlier, what does everybody think of green board links + icons and a blue and white gradient background? (Along with blue for selected tabs) I also wonder if light peach (The color of the lemming's skin) would look interesting as a third option. The blue and green could be swapped too if need be.

Green on light blue isn't a great combo for readability IMO.

No, but normal colored text on a light green or light blue background should work. :)

Isn't the background already technically light blue?

I think a dark background with light text would be better, similar to Discord. I recently experimented with a Dark Mode for the Forums, but didn't get very far with it...!

Ideally, the site would have both a "light mode" and a "dark mode" to suit different people's readability and time of day, etc.

namida

Alright, how's that? :P

Further tweaks are likely needed, but it's a start at least.

Wow, quite audacious for a first attempt! Nice background, and an overall good job.

I think the pastel green boxes, (As you see in Post reply etc.) while an interesting choice is a bit too light. I thought the colour of lemming's hair was #00BB00 anyway. My GetColor app is reading #54B062 on the darkest shade. So, reduce/take off the red and blue, so I can read the white text better.

The yellow board text is almost invisible inside the light green, I had to read it in Tritanopia mode. Maybe make it brown (To match the background) or blue?

The new Forum theme is definitely a step in the right direction

Here's some specific feedback:

In the above image,

A - this margin is now far too bright (i.e the bit between the dirt backdrop and the dark green colours of the posts), I'd suggest darkening this to a shade just a little bit above the backdrop.

B - the orange for names doesn't seem to go with this theme any more, I would suggest either navy blue or a very dark crimson/burgundy, to compliment the brown backdrop.

C - I'd also suggest a darker shade of blue than this for titles, links, etc. Maybe just a few shades lighter than navy.

D - backgrounds for quotes now need to be a much darker grey; it looks too "highlighted" within the post.

And, in this image, the green in the background (behind the logo) is way too light compared to the now much darker dirt backgrop. If the two were more closely matched, it would definitely be an improvement:

Pretty much everything else looks just grand for now. I'm sure other things will come up as I browse the Forum over the next few days, but my initial impressions are generally positive. Nice work! :lemcat:

EDIT: Another quick thought - maybe try switching so that the post backgrounds are shades of blue/slate grey and the link/topic text is dark green.

Dullstar

Overall, the theme is nice and makes things less generic, but most of the blue text could probably stand to be a different color (dark green, maybe?). I'd also say that the board titles on the main page are a bit hard to read - would suggest making them darker.

After having seen it for a while now, I find the new look quite strenuous on the eye. Standard black letters simply don't pop out from that green background as from a blue one.

I would certainly still prefer the old one over the current one. Is there any way to switch it back (on a user-by-user basis)? I checked in the "Look and Layout" tab of my settings, but apparently, you can only choose between different smiley sets there, not forum skins :D .

I guess technically, white or yellow font on a darker (green? blue?) background would be less strenuous on the eye. At least that's what I gathered from when I was working at a vocational promotion centre for visually impaired people 8-) : White or yellow letters on a black background was the way to go there. Though that particular combination obviously wouldn't fit Lemmings. Just the basic idea "bright fonts, dark backgrounds" could be adapted.

For example, as I'm writing this, the preview of the title of the post (bold and white on green background) is easily legible, but not the preview of the text body itself.

I agree with Strato to some extent, the old colour scheme was slightly easier to read. However, the forum does need a "dark mode" with light text on a dark background.

So, whilst tweaks are being made, maybe options would be a good idea: "classic" could simply revert to the old style fr those that prefer it, "new" could be a brand new, as yet undecided colour scheme, and "dark" would be a straight-up white on dark grey, for those of use who find black on white a bit blinding.

kaywhyn

Agree with both Strato and WillLem above. As much as I love the color green due to being my favorite color, it's too difficult to read black text against the green background. I also don't like the background quoted material appears in. It's currently way too difficult to tell if something is being quoted and painful to look at in contrast to when it had the blue background. Maybe if it was a bit darker it would be fine. Thus, I too prefer the old look for the time being. An option to switch back to it would be nice.
