Rule guess:
Convert letters in koans to numbers (A = 1, B = 2, ...), sum all resulting numbers. Koan is buddha iff total is divisible by 3.

I have only checked DOGS, which adds to 45, so it's worth a try. Adding 3 of the same letter will not change status apparently.

Oh my. DOG was the passing one, not DOGS.

I'll drop another hint (or rather, give an infinite number of white koans):
All sequences consisting of multiple As in a row and nothing else, have the Buddha nature, except for A and AA. (Though as you can clearly see, those aren't the only koans that have it.)

Rambling: Koans don't seem to depend on order of letters. Having the same letter make up at exactly half of the koan seems to makes stuff correct. Strange: Freak good, and Freaky bad. Mighty good, and Might bad. "mainly because I checked it due to misreading yours" -> buddha nature depends on some nonintuitive algorithm, at least it's not decidable on first sight, in 1-2 seconds.
