I see on IRC that people can make direct links to files they put in DropBox:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/43603680/themon0lith.txt" class="bbc_link" target="_blank">https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/43603680/themon0lith.txt

But when I try it out just now with a new free account, the only option I have is to create "share" links for files I upload to DropBox, which look like this:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/3pfxw1g4dmlmbbx/DirectLinkPleaseYouStupidPieceOfCrap.txt" class="bbc_link" target="_blank">https://www.dropbox.com/s/3pfxw1g4dmlmbbx/DirectLinkPleaseYouStupidPieceOfCrap.txt

This opens up a preview/download page which is not the same as a direct link (which matters if the file in question is HTML, though to be fair, I suspect DropBox probably won't support direct links to HTML files anyhow even with the first kind of link).  What do I need to do to get the first kind of link?  Is that feature still supported by DropBox with new accounts?

What I do is, I go to my shared folder (the one called 'Public') in a file browser, right-click on the file I want to link and in the context menu that pops up I can pick "copy public link".
If that doesn't work, maybe you can figure out your user ID somehow and then create the link manually.

I have Dropbox version 2.10.3. I don't remember when I signed up for it though.

Ah I see, I didn't realize it has to be done through the file system and not purely from the web browser interface.  I'll give that a try later, although currently I wound up hosting the HTML file using 000webhost.com which seems to be okay.

on another note; sometimes you may right click and the proper options don't pop up especially if you just put the file in there. Click away and wait a moment then try again. At least this happens to me.
