Custlemm and LemEdit under Win2000

Hi guys,
I got Lemmings to work under win2k using DosBox. Now I'd like to make Custlemm and LemEdit to work fine too.
Running DosBox then Custlemm I get an error "unable to find MSCDEX extensions".
With LemEdit I get the program working, but mouse doesnt work.

For CustLemm, you can solve the problem by mapping your CD-ROM drive. I don't know why CustLemm requires a CD-ROM drive, but that is the error.

So if your CD-ROM drive is D:, then you would type "mount d d:\ -t cdrom". You don't actually need to use D:, but that will solve that problem.

As for LemEdit, the problem is that you need a mouse hooked up into your COM1 port. Basically, you can't use USB or PS/2 mice unless you have a PS/2 to serial converter... or something like that... I have the same exact problem :( &#A0;Luckily, my parents have an old Gateway 2000 computer that can run it fine.

LemEdit doesn't work at all under Dosbox.

For me, it doesn't work under Windows: There's not enough conventional memory. How can I resolve this?

It's not true, I managed to get LemEdit to run in DOSBox, but you will have the same problem with the mouse. (Edit: maybe it was my imagination. I just tried again and now LemEdit doesn't run at all. &#A0;>:( )

Nxau, it's a fact! I tried it sometimes and each time, it doesn't work!

I'll try under plain Dos to see if it works!

For under Windows - Right click on LemEdit, go to Properties, and go to the Memory tab, and set everything to Auto(or if it doesn't have Auto, set it to the highest possible value).

For DosBox - I get it working without fail every time, although the mouse doesn't work.

Which version of Dosbox do you used?

Me, under Dosbox 0.63, I tried and got an error:

-Initializing hardware clock driver ... >>> 2sec = 00.13s ... FAILED

LemEdit requires the on-board timer to be set properly ...

For me, I get a check on the hardware clock driver, but the editor refuses to load up after that (full black screen). (0.63) I remember it loading up correctly before, though. Again, it really doesn't matter, because the mouse still won't work  >:(

LemEdit can be used without the mouse, it's just annoying to do so.

How?? Please explain. I'm not sure what the keyboard functions are except Esc/Enter to quit. (In the readme, they don't give any support on using LemEdit without the mouse.) The reason I want to know is to fix a few backroutes in my levels, so even if it's annoying to do, it still should not be too much of a hassle.

To whom it may concern.

You can't do a lot without a mouse, but you can load and saves levels, individually or in packs, view the general details and view and change the skills. You can also add terrain and interactive objects, but you can't do anything with the existing ones. Here's the full list:

  The keyboard shortcuts are:

  alt+f = 'Files' menu
  alt+e = 'Edit' menu
  alt+g = 'General' menu
  alt+t = 'Terrain' menu
  alt+p = 'Prefs' menu
  alt+m = 'Misc' menu
  alt+m = 'Skills' menu
  alt+o = Objects' menu

  From the 'Files' menu:

  l = 'Load level from pack'
  s = 'Save level in pack'
  r= 'Remove level from pack'
  d = 'Load level directly'
  v = 'Save level directly'

  From the 'Edit' menu:

  p = 'Properties'
  r = 'Replicate'
  m = 'Remove'
  s = 'Add steel area'
  c = 'Clear the level'
  f = 'Bring to front'
  b = 'Send to back'
  o = 'Select by order', although there's nothing you can do in this screen.
  t = 'Select through'. Again, you can't do anything in this menu without a mouse.
  u = 'Unselect part'

  Nothing can be changed in the 'General' menu, but you can do all that fairly easily with a hex editor if you save the level in uncompressed format. I'll have to find the formatting information again.

  From the 'Terrain' menu:

  enter = 'Add this'
  down or right arrow = 'Next'
  up or left arrow = 'Previous'
  esc = 'Cancel'
  s = 'Change set'

  Nothing can be changes from the 'Prefs' menu without a mouse.

  From the 'Misc' menu:

  a = 'About Lemedit'
  c = 'Editor colours', although nothing can be changed in this menu from the keyboard.
  g = 'Change graphics'
  j = 'Fast screen jump'
  u = 'Usage statistics'
  l = 'Level check'

  From the 'Skill' menu:

  1 - 8 for the corresponding skill, and 'enter' to accept or 'esc' to keep the original value.

  'Objects' menu works exactly the same as 'Terrain'

  Press 'esc' to exit Lemedit.

  In every box, press 'enter' to exit and keep changes, or 'esc' to exit without changes.

  When a piece is selected, press 'delete' to remove it or 'insert' to replicate it.

  As well as being unable to select parts already existing, or view or change steel, you also can't change the Z co-ordinance of a piece, except through 'bring to front' and 'send to back'.

Thanks! It's unfortunate that there is such limited keyboard support and such specific requirements for the mouse.

If you want to get techincal, though, "Select By Order" can be used to select the Interactive Object in position 00 with the use of the enter key. Since it can be then moved to the back, any pre-existing Interactive Object can theoretically be selected and modified, one by one. (Indeed it is tedious, and the relative order of Z values can't really be changed.)

I find it very strange that you can't even manually type in X/Y/Z values with some sort of hotkey for terrain/objects, select through/by order, etc. since you need the keyboard to do the typing anyway! Bah!

So there's no way to access the No, Ud, etc. flags either?  :-(

Not that I know of. I have a PC with Win98 on a separate partition, so I use Lemedit in that. Tomorrow I'll get a serial mouse and see if that works in XP.
