Also, every level is now titled "Unknown String". No idea what the problem is

Hmm, this is new.  If I understand correctly, these problems are specifically after applying the patch, and not something that is already happening before you applied the patch, correct? Perhaps there's something about your particular version that isn't working well with the patch.  Unfortunately I forgot to warn you to make a backup of the EXE first, though I think you can probably find an original copy on the CD.  I may need you to PM me that original unpatched EXE and try to see if I can identify what's different.

(No promises though--for starters, I don't know if I still have working CDs of the game anymore, so I may already be limited in what I can test out myself.)

You can also try the patch but with Window's compatibility settings turned off.  However, I don't expect that to do any better since the "3D accelerator" error thing was not one of the things the patch try to fix, so turning off compatibility settings most likely will make it come back again even with the patch.

Out of curiosity (you can PM me if you don't want to answer publicly), is your copy of the game from an actual game CD, or is it from, um, elsewhere?

I have the hard copy of the game. I'm going to try using the 1.0 version patch instead of the 1.1, since it sounded like the 1.1 was made for an updated version of the game. (I bought one of the initial release copies of the game)

The unknown string isn't new; I had the same issue back when I first used the patch-- it happens when you do something incorrectly when installing the patch but I can't remember what. I was one of the people who unzipped the box file and screwed around with that. Speaking of which, I'd like to find if I kept those files right now...

Unfortunately Arty, this was the easy part; if you're experience is like the rest of us; you may encounter more serious problem when trying to record the game. The recording flickers badly and as of yet, no one knows how to fix this.  THough I hope some one can look into it; I may try again if you need the help.

A few (probably not helpful) random thoughts to fix recording flickering:

- IIRC Revolution runs in fullscreen, right? Is there a way to run it in windowed mode, and if so does it record better?
- What if you ran the game in a virtual machine and recorded the virtual machine?

That's essentially what mobius suggested a few posts back.  You will still need to hunt down a legal or illegal copy of Windows though (mobius suggested eBay for cheap CDs, although I don't know if technically they'd really be legal either since you are probably reusing someone else's product key, though I doubt MS cares given how hard they've tried to get people to move off XP), and I'm not sure what kind of performance you'll get having to run it on a virtual machine.  But I suppose it could be worth a try.

If you go down that route, I wonder if maybe you could first try WINE instead.  It's usually for running Windows programs on non-Windows OSes like Linux, but there's a slim chance it might help in this case as well even if you're already on Windows.  Though from the patch thread, it sounded like the game needs the patch even for WINE.

I'm not aware that there's a windowed mode and suspect the game probably doesn't come with one (most older games won't), though there may be third-party solutions available for that sort of thing.

I tested recording it, and it seems to work perfectly fine. The frame rate isn't great, but I doubt people will care/notice.

Good to hear.  Out of curiosity, what software did you use for recording?

Colorful Arty

OBS (Open Broadcaster Software). I use that for video and in-game audio and Audacity for my commentary.
