Lemmings Main / Re: Which Lemmings was your first?
February 21, 2024, 03:47:57 PM
No need to be embarrassed about whatever your first game was. A love of the game franchise (and the community attached to it) can be fostered in many ways, and despite it's slightly mediocre reputation, Puzzle Adventure is a fun little game that's a good way to spark that interest. Most people around here absolutely love the classics (L1, L2, L3) - myself included. 8-)

My very first Lemmings WAS the very first Lemmings, back in 1991. But I have a soft spot for pretty much all of them.

Hooray for good vibes and hooray for Lemmings. Also, since you posted here I can jump at the chance to say, hooray for SuperLemmix! It's a lot of fun to play, I'm fascinated by the project in general, and the work that you've done is pretty amazing. I had some trouble downloading it previously because my stupid laptop is stupid, but now I'm up and running and it's fab. I also appreciate the ongoing discussions about what to change and what to keep the same, but I also understand that SuperLemmix's overall philosophy is different from NeoLemmix's, which is all good. :D It's all lemmingy fun.

Also, your comment about turning 40 made me feel old. :lem-mindblown: 8-) :P

My current profile pic is from Lemmings Paintball but maybe I should change it to Wise Old Lorock from the Lomax game. :-[

Oof... Lemmings Puzzle Adventure is an exhausting game and I feel like my energy for it is fizzling out. :lem-mindblown: :D At a fundamental level, it's a game designed to be played endlessly, like so many mobile games, and "live service" games, etc. With any of the other Lemmings games, the objective is to play the levels, solve the puzzles, complete the game. With Puzzle Adventure, as fun as it is, the objective is simply: Keep playing. You must playing to unlock more stuff that will help you keep playing, on and on, ad infinitum.

Having said that, it has been quite fun. But I'm "retiring" from the game at the end of Season 66. From my POV I feel like I've experienced at least a little bit of everything the game has to offer, so I'll consider it "complete" and I can delete it from my phone.

In summary: Lemmings Puzzle Adventure is not terrible. It's not even BAD. It's just a style of game that I can't commit to in the same way as the others. Until someone returns to the Lemmings licence and creates another commerical release, I've got NeoLemmix, SuperLemmix, Lix and this brilliant fan community to keep me going.

I really appreciate your in-depth thoughts about this, especially as you have such a thorough view of the game's strengths and weaknesses. I'm still in the early levels of the game, but I'm enjoying it on my own terms, and it's also useful to know what to expect as I keep playing. Knowing myself, I imagine I'll play it haphazardly or even intensively for a while... and then drop it for a long break. That's just how I roll.

In summary, the game IS fun - and I can just about overlook the things I really dislike about it in order to play it and have a good time. Previously, I might not have thought so. Currently, I feel like it's something I can just about add to my list of "casual" Lemmings games to dip into from time to time. And that's cool.

I commute a lot, so games like Lemmings Puzzle Adventure (and Lemmings Touch) are possibly things I could work into my gaming routine, see if it helps me keep my neurons sparking in a positive and helpful way. :D

Oh, and there's something really goofy and entertaining about the "lore" addition that lemmings apparently hatch from eggs now. ??? :P But hey, it makes as much sense as anything else right? Millas, Sonic lemmings, and lemmings colonising asteroids. It's all good. :lemming:

Disclaimer: Puzzle Adventure is NOT a fantastic game. I know this, and I want to acknowledge that right at the start. ;P However, recently when I was bored and distracted I decided to re-download it to my phone and give it another go, and after 18 months since my last attempt, I can report that I'm enjoying myself more than I expected.

LPA is currently on season 66(!), and we all know exactly what kind of mobile game it is, but I feel like Exient did a good job of creating a lemmings game based on their brief. The tile-based gameplay for a touchscreen makes complete sense, and I actually find it less fiddly and frustrating than, say, Lemmings Touch on my PSVita. Is that heresy? All I know is, Touch may be a superior Lemmings game, but I did find the controls a bit of an obstacle at times.

Meanwhile, Puzzle Adventure DOES seem to have been tweaked and improved a bit. The free-to-play mobile game structure is still awkward and cringey, but the updates seem to have made it so that the prompts and ads are less intrusive and annoying. Because I'm a principled son-of-a-badger, I refuse outright to pay for in-game stuff OR to watch ads in exchange for gameplay features. And, 99% of the time, this seems to work for me. A lot of the prompts seem to be optional now, which I'm not sure was the case when I last tried the game over a year ago. I can get away with not paying anything or watching ads for as long as I like, it seems.

I admit that maybe I'm misremembering. And the only reason I decided to give the mobile game another go is because I was bored, curious, and knee-deep in my current Lemmings hyperfixation (hooray for neurodivergence!). But the core gameplay of LPA is short, moderately satisfying, and obviously designed to encourage you to keep playing no matter what. Sure, it deviates from the core Lemmings formula that we all know and love, but then again, so do Lemmings games like Paintball, Revolution, Lomax, etc. If it wasn't part of the Lemmings franchise, I probably wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. But because it's Lemmings, it has just enough charm and familiarity for me to engage with it... for the time being.

Has anyone else tried LPA again recently? Its negative reputation is possibly not completely fairly earned, and playing it certainly involves a mental adjustment. It'll never replace any of the other Lemmings games in my affections, but thanks to my stupid restless brain and my curiosity I can report that it's not all bad.

Other lemmings games are designed to be played to completion. With LPA, there IS no completion. The aim is to keep playing, and keep playing, and keep playing, forever. Once you realise that, you can make the game work for you - and simply drop out whenever you want. It's very disposable. As mobile games go, it's towards the higher end of the continuum, considering some of the awful crap that's out there. And that seems to be because Exient's software updates have been aimed at making it more user friendly lately.

Thoughts, anyone? 8-)

I'm glad that someone out there feels similarly to the way I do.

Hi all,

Happy New Year! (Yes, I can get away with saying that until at least February, so deal with it 8-) )

I haven't dropped by the forums for a little while as I've had far too much going on in my life, but with the start of a New Year I wanted to try to get things off to a positive start and spread some love around the interwebs while I'm at it. Let's face it, 2024 has the potential to be a scary or unhappy year in many ways, so I wanted to try to tackle that with some wholesome goodness. I've been getting back into Lemmings in a big way since the middle of December - I'm fascinated by the developments in SuperLemmix, and in the meantime I'm considering making some brand new levels in the NeoLemmix editor... something I haven't actually done in this community since 2010! (Yes, I'm an old fart)

So, here are some random bullet points based on the title of this thread. It's silly, it's fluff, it's nonsense, but it's my way of saying hello, happy new year, and that I hope everyone is doing okay these days. Hooray for Lemmings!

What I Love About The Lemmings Community:

1) It has huge longevity and it feels like it'll be around forever. People love the original games with a passion, and new generations of fans have joined in, and even though the Lemmings licence has had its own ups and downs over the years, I feel like there's enough love and creativity in the fan community that some form of playable lemmings game will be around for years to come

2) Literally thousands and thousands of levels to play. And some fiendish puzzles that I know, deep down, I'll never properly solve. You're all too intelligent and cunning for the likes of me. And that's fine

3) The variety of creators and designers and fans here on the forums, and the way in which people come and go and are always made to feel welcome on their return (speaking from my own experience). Even though I haven't been playing Lemmings solidly through 2023, I've been lucky enough to connect to some really lovely and fascinating folks via this online space, and it has helped me in a number of ways with some things involving my overall wellbeing and personal growth, mental health, etc. I won't bore you with the details, but I love that this place contains a variety of lovely nerds :) It has more of a positive impact than you might realise

4) NeoLemmix. It just rules, man

5) The feedback and commentary and content of Lemmings community members who regularly post stuff on YouTube for me to sit down and enjoy. Random highlights from the likes of kaywhyn, Ichotolot, Flopsy, WillLem, Tomato Watcher, and so many more.

6) And, errrm, I love that whenever I watch a YouTube video by Flopsy, the algorithm decides to recommend me Sophie Ellis-Bexter music videos alongside them. :D Yay!

Okay, I'll shut up for now. This thread was fairly spontaneous, after all. I'd love to hear other people's thoughts, but it's also okay if you feel like you don't have much to say or you don't know how to article it properly. I empathise with that a LOT.

I just wanted to express my overall gratitude and start 2024 with a smile. I'm looking forward to messing around with NL Editor and maybe throwing together some ridiculously easy levels that can be solved in 5 seconds by every single one of you. ;P

Cheers from Ye Olde Weirdy Beardy

Thank you! I hope it really is that simple. It wouldn't surprise me if that was the case. I am, after all, a bit of an idiot. :forehead:

Yes, I've been running the L2-FIX.COM - and when I do, DOSBox seems to begin loading the game in a window, and then stops. There's text in the window indicating that the crack has been detected, but all that shows after that is a blinking cursor.

Honestly, I'm baffled. I'm going to re-download and re-install, just to make sure there are no extraneous files or data that's influencing the boot-up without me realising.

Thank you for your input. <3

Well didn't think my silly little video would inspire a post!

This is exactly the kind of thing I like to do :P Nice list

Absolutely! Nobody really plays Lemmings for the lore, but it's fun to try to fit it all together like a wonky jigsaw. :P

As far as I can piece together from the comic and the books, the Lemmings seem to have been around for thousands of years, may (or may not) originate from another dimension(!) and basically just wander aimlessly, causing chaos and mayhem wherever they go. They lived on their own island at first, which "the Guide" (aka the player) helped them settle. Then the same Guide helped them in their exodus from that island in L2 and helped them settle on their new archipelago in L3. After that, the lore is a bit of a free-for-all. 3D Lemmings suggested that there's still tribes such as the Circus lemmings and Medieval lemmings, but the lemming population just becomes super-diverse by the time of Puzzle Adventure, as they venture out into new worlds!

Lemmings PSP is just a reboot of the original game, so it slots into the same niche in the timeline. Lemmings Tribes (from Glu) could be a re-telling of Lemmings Chronicles but from a different point of view (focussing on Medieval and Space lemmings instead of Egyptian and Shadow).

Lemmings PS3 and Lemmings Touch expand upon PSP, so perhaps they are set during the the pre-L2 era, but the inclusion of mischievous Lemmings suggests a later setting.

Random thoughts:

Polyonomus from Love a Lemming could actually be another name from Evil Ed, the lemming wizard.

NeoLemmix, and all its tilesets and skills and wackiness, is an "anthology" of lemmings eras from L1 right through to the "modern era", which is why we've got excellent things like Minim's PS3 remakes, and levels using graphics from Sonic, Freedom Planet, Rayman, etc. The lemmings literally wander all across the multiverse. There are no rules. One thing always stays the same, no matter where in the timeline the player is: the lemmings are wandering around thoughtlessly, and they need help :)

I fully admit that I'm just passing the time while I figure out how to get my copy of Lemmings 2 to work properly on DOSBox. :P At the moment it refuses to load anything beyond the first level of each tribe, and until I get it sorted I won't be able to play Tribes of Steel or Quest From Kieran 2, which I've been *itching* to try since I re-connected with the Lemmings fan community! :-[
You probably have the demo version, which doesn't allow you to go beyond the first level of each tribe.
I think you'll need to run L2-FIX.COM, if I remember correctly? Or maybe it was something else, but give it a shot.
Here's a download that has it: https://www.camanis.net/lemmings/files/games/lemmings_2/lemmings_2_dos.zip

I think that's the version I already downloaded (it seems to contain all the levels, as well as the L2-fix thingy) - but I might re-download it anyway. I'm using DOSBox via the D-Fend Reloaded front-end, which allows me to play different DOS games by quickly and easily clicking profiles rather than mounting the c: in the DOS prompt every time. I wonder if that's part of what's causing my issues...?

Completed the first 2 ranks, here are my replays. I'll come back and do the rest another time. Looking good so far, these are great levels!

It's cool that you're enjoying it! And folks have been very kind in general. It's pretty strange to be back on the forums after such a long break; I feel simultaneously like a newbie, and an old fogey. :-[ It's particularly strange (and funny) to be interacting with Lemmings community folks whose content I've been enjoying for a while now - such as yourself WillLem - and the likes of kaywhyn, namida, Flopsy, IchoTolot, etc.

The Lemmings community has evolved so much in the time I've been away, and the high level of fun stuff that people are producing is always pretty intimidating. As well as the mediocre stuff that I've re-released for NeoLemmix, I also create a handful of levels for L2 back in the day, and I think the download links for them are still buried somewhere deep in the history of this forum! :P I might look into resurrecting them too, at some point.

TL;DR - I'm glad that people are playing my old levels, and vaguely mystified that people think that they're good. They're not. But I had fun making them.

Lemmings Main / Charting the Lemmingverse?

Inspired by The Tomato Watcher's excellent video on Lemmings's weird lore, which can be found here...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oOD9PLcPGQ

... it occurred to me to throw out a quick list of everything either "official" or officially-licensed as being associated with our favourite green-haired numpties in some fashion - mostly because I was simply curious:

Lemmings 1 (inc. ONML and Xmas/Holiday Lemmings)
Lemmings 2: The Tribes
Lemmings 3: The Lemmings Chronicles (or All New World of Lemmings)
Lemmings 3D (inc. the Winterland expansion)
Lemmings Paintball
The Adventures of Lomax
Lemmings Revolution
Lemmings Forever (cancelled game from the early 2000s)
Love a Lemming
Lemmings PSP
EyeToy Lemmings
Lemmings PS3
Lemmings Tribes (the Glu Mobile game not to be confused with L2)
Lemmings Touch
Lemmings Puzzle Adventure

That's the games. In terms of other media, I found:

Lemmings (comic featured in Max Overload)
The Story of the 12 Tribes of Lemming Island (book)
The Genesis Quest (adventure game book 1)
The Hypnosis Enigma (adventure game book 2)

And that seems to be everything. Have I missed anything? Have there been forum threads like this one before? In which case, I apologise profusely. For me this was just an amusing list-making exercise. :P

Of course, NeoLemmix and Lix are part of my "headcanon" too, with NL being like an anthology series of lemming adventures from all across the timelines, and the Lix "creatures" simply being a peculiar mutant sub-species of lemming with yellow hair. ???

EDIT: I added EyeToy Lemmings, which until recently I didn't really appreciate as its own separate thing - but it is!
