It certainly sounds like a good idea to be compatible with NeoLemmix given that it's where most of the level-design activity is happening, but -- reading though that design doc -- that's a lot of game mechanics.  Personally, I prefer games with fewer mechanics -- especially in the case of puzzle games.  But given the popularity of NeoLemmix compared to Lemmix, I seem to be in the minority.

The Lemmings Faithful and Let's Go - More Faithful styles are now available as DOS Lemmings graphics sets.  (See attachment to this post.)

These files can be used with
  • Golems
  • Lemmix¹
  • Customized Lemmings
  • LemEdit²

Due to the limits imposed by DOS Lemmings, only a subset of the pieces and gadgets could be included.  92Dexter11 provided a selection of pieces and gadgets which we iterated on until it would fit within the limits.

Of course, if you want a different subset of pieces or gadgets, you can edit the graphics sets using the VGAGR editor in Golems v2.0.  Just be sure to include the edited files with your level pack.

I'm not much of a level designer, so these graphics sets have not been thoroughly tested.  If you find a problem, please let me know.

¹ For use in Lemmix, the files should be renamed to "VGAGR17" to "VGAGR26" (and the corresponding GROUND?O files as well) because Lemmix doesn't map the graphics set number to an ASCII character like DOS Lemmings does.
² For use in LemEdit, the files will need to be renamed to "VGAGR0" to "VGAGR9" because LemEdit was not designed for more than 10 graphics sets.

Site Discussion / Disable PHPSESSID query parameter
February 03, 2025, 11:02:00 PM
Setting session.use_only_cookies to 1 should disable use of the PHPSESSID query parameter.  Enabling session.use_only_cookies protects against session hijacking when people share links (which is why the default is 1).

Also, when session.use_only_cookies is not enabled, all the URLs on the forum are unique each time a web spider accesses the site (which you can see on archive.org).

Looks like SMF is specifically disabling session.use_only_cookies, so this is probably what needs to change.  (See also: an issue on GitHub about it.)

Quote from: WillLem on February 02, 2025, 07:20:48 PM(and possibly DOS?) behaviour
You don't want to emulate the DOS behavior, I'm sure.  The DOS behavior is:
  • When attempting to assign the bashing skill, play the "brick" sound effect if the checked pixel in front of the lemming is metal.
  • When attempting to assign the mining skill, play no sound effect if the checked pixel below the lemming is metal or else play the "brick" sound effect if the checked pixel in front of the lemming is metal.
  • When attempting to assign the digging skill, play no sound effect if the checked pixel below the lemming is metal.
So the only time a skill rejection sound is played is when the checked pixel in front of the lemming is metal (and even then only sometimes), and it's the "brick" sound effect.

Site Discussion / Re: [SUG] Post feedback buttons

I'm not strictly opposed, but I think we need to consider whether that interactivity is helpful or harmful.  Are people going to feel bad because they didn't get enough "likes" on their post?

I've had a similar click-the-emoji feature in the works for the LLDb, but I haven't deployed it because I'm not certain that it's helpful or that people will even use it.

I have been pondering how solution visibility should work on the LLDb.

Currently:
  • A player can view his/her own solutions.
  • A player can view metadata for the "best" solutions and the intended solution.  Before solving the level there is a spoiler warning.
  • A player can view the intended solution after solving the level.
  • A level pack owner can view all the solutions for a level.
  • When not signed in, a player has the same access as a signed-in player who has not solved the level except that there are no spoiler warnings.

I am not exactly satisfied with this arrangement.  I think it could be fun for players to view other players solutions (even if he/she hasn't solve the level).  And most solutions are on YouTube anyway, though perhaps not challenge (≈"best") solutions.

What I'm thinking:
  • A player can view his/her own solutions.
  • A player can view metadata for the "best" solutions and the intended solution.  Before solving the level there is a spoiler warning.
  • A player can view all other player solutions.  Before solving the level there is a spoiler warning.
  • A player can view the intended solution.  Before solving the level there is a spoiler warning.
  • When not signed in, a player has the same access as a signed-in player except that there are no spoiler warnings.

Something else I was considering was allowing a level pack owner to withhold intended solutions (per level).  This might be done until the creator is relatively confident that glaring backroutes have been removed, mostly as a courtesy to early players who have backrouted the level to avoid accidentally spoiling the intended solution.  It wouldn't be a strong protection against someone who was determined to view the intended solution.

Thoughts?

Grotto is a very nice counterpart to the original fire style.  Just add some little flames (or little glowing wisps of light) on the exit and it'd be a proper original style.  (Though I guess flashing writing isn't unprecedented either.)

NeoLemmix Main / Re: If there was a NeoLemmix Wiki...
January 31, 2025, 12:31:22 AM
There's hardly enough interest for a thread, let alone a board.  And even if there were, that's what the "Talk" pages of the wiki are for.

If you think there should be some page on the wiki, you don't need to post about it; you can just make the page.  It's a wiki.

For level packs that were not originally made for NeoLemmix, it would be nice to include a link to the topic/post for the original pack as well (when one still exists).

One of the ranks has to be "Déjà Vu" and full of repeat levels, right?  :P

I had a Logitech wireless mouse that had a similar problem – it was very difficult to move the pointer by 1 pixel.  I assume it's a power-saving feature where the mouse doesn't transmit its movement to the computer if the movement is very small.  I ended up just getting a different brand of mouse because I find it uncomfortable to lower the pointer velocity.
