[Minsweeper Thread]
EDIT: W00T 4 seconds!
Hey! that's my record :XD: also!
Does anyone else play Density mode? That's where you use the Custom setting to increase the number of mines, and play to clear the grid with as many mines as possible, regardless of time.
My records are:
9x9 Beginner -- 32 mines (world record is 41)
Intermediate -- 75 mines (w.r. 88)
Expert -- 135 mines (w.r. 160)
24x30 maximum grid -- 200 mines (w.r. 218)
But for Density mode, the overall number of mines is limited to a certain amount, isn't it?
I mean not the theoretical maximum amount, the field size, but a lower one.
IIRC, e.g. for the maximum size, it was something around 668, is that correct?
(I don't have to original minesweeper anymore.)
I only have the Minesweeper Clone tseug suggested, and there's no limitation (e.g. you can set 63 mines for beginner).
Being able to do that, it's easily possible to get x * y - 1 for any size because the first click will never be a mine.
This is true -- but OTOH it shouldn't make much difference because it's easy to stipulate that only "sensible" amounts of mines count. A reasonable limit for what counts as sensible would be three-quarters the number of squares on the grid; even the Beginner WRs are just over half.
Density takes a lot of tries... so I don't like it.
Does anyone know what 3BV means?
EDIT: Hmm my intermediate record (41) was 2.99 clicks/s. :winktounge:
EDIT2: I found out what 3BV is with wikipedia.
Not too great yet, but improving.

I've done a bit of mine sweeper in my time. My record for beginner is 4 seconds, but I average around 18 or 20 seconds. Intermediate and expert, I haven't attempted too much. Density mode sounds difficult and annoying, I did that once when I was REALLY REALLY bored. I loaded as many mines as I could onto te biggest board that I could. The most spaces I've ever uncovered at one time was 5, about half of all the empty spaces.
SUB 40!!!

Now if only I could get myself to do expert some more...
EDIT: 4-33-160 :) sub 200 total!
!???!?!?!!!!!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????!! Nice job! My records for expert and intermediate:
Intermediate: I forget but I think about 143 seconds.
Expert: never beat it.
And then I see you over there with your sub-200 score!
EDIT: I almost beat expert once, but the second counter was at about 350. :XD:
Meh, I've got one second before... (on beginner)

Now THAT is luck. BTW if you play enough you will inevitably get a one-click board... :XD: Which is why I think begginner records are pretty pointless unless it's an average.
A one-click would give zero seconds, wouldn't it?
And, couldn't the same thing happen on larger boards anyway?
Nope, your time is rounded up to the nearest second always, so the minimum time is 1 second.
The chances of one-click boards on harder difficulties are so low that it is probable they will never occur due to limitations in the pseudorandom number generator.
So it's a stroke of luck to get a one click board on beginner? Then a friend of mine is decieved. He thinks there's a spot on the board you can cilck to get a one click boardf for beginner every time. :XD:
BTW:what happened to the I agree and I disagree smileys?

Yeah, it's luck. You can easily disprove that theory in 81 very quick games (click every spot once...)
But! Where you click still makes a difference, because of how mines are revealed. It's statistically better to click a corner than a side, and a side than the center (but the differences aren't that big).
I think minesweeper is conspiring against me... I 've gotten 32 seconds 3 times so far. :undecided:
EDIT: 27! Now on to expert....
Do you mean 32 seconds for beginner of intermediate? I got the seemingly customary 4 second beginner thing, but I have no idea how you might get 27 seconds on intermediate.
27 needs practice, nice coordination and a fairly good board. When I was at my best in my last year of college I could usually get below 27 once a session.
18 on the other hand, which I only achieved once... I still don't know how I did that
I can usually get somewhere around 27, but there's a slight difference, you are talking about intermediate, I'm talking about beginner :XD:. The only time I really practice alot is in programming class. I get done with my work before everyone else. IT IS AWESOME! Basically, I go to school, and play videogames for about an hour, on alot of the days.
Are there any strategies for minesweeper? I'm horrible at it.
