(Latest version of The NeoLemmix Introduction Pack (https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=5204.0))
OK, the Time records have been released.
Thanks to namida, Proxima and all others for their earlier contributions to the challenge threads involving Redux. Thanks also to Kaywhyn, DireKrow and Flopsy for replays/LPs to the NeoLemmix Introduction Pack, and to WillLem for uploading the Lemminas results. Any more questions or errors on the table please let me know.
Latest Update: NeoLemmix Introduction Pack updated to V1.5 with new levels and results, plus improvements to older ones. Some Redux replays reuploaded to add nukes to existing solutions. The most recent level improvement is Zany 13: "Don't leave any lemmings" with a time of 0:53.53, though there is room to improve at the start of the solution thanks to the exit facing the opposite way.

Namida's improvement to Zany 18 on the Minimum Skills thread also reduces the time by around 11 seconds. Good job! I also updated Proxima's SYCLW solution to Manic 17 that has a slightly more sensible time record.
Otherwise, looks like this thread is falling down the order quite quickly. If there are no further responses I'll probably list just the latest update on the main post and the log of improvements in this post.
Fastest time is never likely to be as popular as minimum skills and other challenges, because unless you are really frame-perfect there is always room to improve, and that adds up to a lot of effort per level. Still, since it is tracked by NeoLemmix, I'm interested in improving times (for Redux at least), so I will probably get around to it after we're done with other challenges.
For now, here's a genuine time optimisation on Just a Minute, because there's nothing "sensible" about taking a time record from a replay where I was optimising something else :P
I was thinking that would happen; And yes, that solution of yours is a great idea of controlling the crowd, even though there are no hazards ahead. I wonder if this is one of the original backroutes that one of the guys at DMA managed to do until the designer removed that half pillar for Part 2?
Anyway, I've counted your result in, and I'm going to try optimising the new Zany 18 solution with a proper time.
Edit: Zany 18's result now down to 1:29.41, a considerable improvement by nearly 30 seconds. Quite fiddly thanks to me choosing an earlier lemming to mine, resulting in more lemmings not getting trapped, but got there in the end.
If it was a backroute, why would they make a second version of the level instead of just fixing the first one? It's always felt clear to me that the platform is there because you are meant to use it in the first level -- which is why the second one is (intended to be) harder.
Anyway, I've started having a look from the beginning, but these are laborious to do so I'm only doing them in small chunks. Here are my improvements for Gentle 1-16. Gentle 6 (A task for bombers) is obviously impossible to improve further, but even on levels as simple as these, it's hard to make guarantees for most of them.
Most of these are just optimisations of the standard solutions with skill spamming and interrupted miner staircases, but a couple are more interesting -- especially 15 (Darkness of the royal family) in 31 seconds and 16 (A beast of a level) in 55 seconds.
It was bothering me that The Crankshaft was the only Gentle level with a listed time above 2 minutes, so I messed around a bit :P
EDIT: Replaced the replay with a more serious attempt at optimising.
Also, It's hero time in 39.53, another one where I am pretty certain this is the absolute minimum possible.
Hey, nice job on Gentle 25. I like the start when you specified the release rate for each bomber across the wall. Also, the climbing bomber looks like it takes a while to do and can only be done once, but it's amazing how much height it covers. Watching another experienced player master these non-basher speed tricks was pretty satisfying.
Just updated the table to include a sub-minute time for Manic 31 (Thanks to namida's 7-skill route, I had enough flexibility with the skills to get them down quickly enough). I also simplified the table by removing the redundant rank names, as result filling was taking ages to write. :P
Edit: Added a sub 45 second solution to Lunatic 6. (Like the min-skills solution, I agree this one is a real giveaway)
Second Edit: Lunatic 13 and 14's records updated to 1:14.53 and 1:06.71 respectively. From 3/12/20 onwards as I am compiling the community's best replays into a single ZIP file, I will be updating the ZIP file rather than scatter updates across different posts. The two attachments that were at the bottom of this post are now on the zip file.
Third Edit: Improved results to Lunatic 26 and 28 confirmed to 1:35.00 and 1:25.88 respectively. 28's update has most certainly been coming considering the shortness of this level.
Still working through Gentle; here are replays for 17-24. Particularly noteworthy savings are "Where do you see Lemmings?" in 39.94 and "Pillar talking" in 1:17.94. (This means "The Crankshaft" is once again the level that requires the most time in this rank.)
More time improvements added to Manic and Lunatic: Particularly to Manic 29, "Just a minute 2", the record time is noticeably faster than Part 1 thanks to the additional climber playing a role. So there should be no more of those silly "00.00"s left to find now. :D
Manic 2: 0:39.06
Manic 12: 0:38.53
Manic 15: 1:25.59
Manic 29: 0:47.94
Lunatic 5: 1:39.76
Lunatic 17: 1:12.71
I will also fix an error to Lunatic 31. The record had already been broken beforehand down to 0:47.35. I will update the table and the replays shortly.
Here's Lunatic 21 The Steel Mines Of Kessel in 2:04.94. I've used all the available Builders and Bombers in this solution, so further optimisations to get it under 2 mins will likely come down to RR magic.
Also, Zany 4 LEMTRIS in 1:24.24. This one's a fairly twiddly multiple-worker solution that could possibly be improved even further with extra twiddliness, but this is about at twiddly as I generally want to be :lemcat:
Heres some early gentle levels I improved the time on
Gentle 1: 18.88 [-1.65] (I'd imagine this one can still be improved on by a few frames)
Gentle 5: 36.76 36.18 36.12 36.00 [-1.18] (Again, probably can be improved)
Gentle 6: 21.47 [-0.59] (Can't see any way to improve this but maybe it can be done)
Gentle 7: 43.82 43.59 [-0.82] (still feels like there should be a faster method)
Gentle 9: 39.29 [-1.83] (another one with probably a better way to do it)
I had a look at the remaining Gentle levels and was able to improve all of 28-31. No luck yet on 26, 27 or 32.
Here's a big improvement to gentle 11, with a time of 25.71 [-13.00]
And gentle 12, time 30.47 29.29 [-3.18]
Slight improvement on gentle 13, time 35.59 [-0.76], still feels like some more optimisation could be done on this one though
Even slighter improvement on gentle 15, time 30.59 [-0.41]
Big improvement for gentle 16, time 44.18 [-11.58], another one that seems to have places to improve still
This is likely to be my only contribution to this challenge. I felt I had to do one. :P
Quite a few improvements picked up by the community last night and this morning. (Thanks for your contributions) I optimised a couple more levels. Also, the Gentle 1 reads "0:17.82" as the result, despite being written as "17.18". Still, I hope everything has been recorded accurately. I refreshed the zip file.
My improvements
Lunatic 21: Improved to 1:54.18 thanks to Proxima's "Crankshaft Bomber" technique (I must keep a record of these techniques sooner rather than later). Still needs optimising for crowd release rate adjustments and narrower gap between builders. Also may need to look at holding the pack with builders if the trap builder somehow becomes an issue.
Manic 31: Improved to 0:47.18 because I took the lower "Vines" route rather than the higher "Gem & Steel" route.
Zany 4: is now 1:24.06, a minor improvement to WillLem's solution, but that digger wasn't needed at the end because he had 1 lemming available to lose. :P
Building on namida's replay, got gentle 1 down to 17.12
Shaved some seconds off the first >1 minute level, gentle 17, time 1.13.82 [-4.30], but I'm sure there's more room for improvement.
Just over a second off gentle 19 too, time 38.18 [-1.76]

OK then. See if I can explain somebody else's original technique well here. I realise I must also congratulate him for that too if I haven't already, so congrats, Proxima! :P
Spoiler
Basically the Spawn rate (Opposite of Release rate) is set at 17 before the first lemming comes out (or on this level, a bit higher because of lower ground before the first bomber is set), but the main part is that after 1 lemming spawns, the rate is set to 19; and then afterwards, the rate goes up by 1 for every consecutive lemming that is chosen to bomb across.
Gentle 20 reduced a little bit to 30.06 [-0.65]
Reply to part of Minim's spoiler above
QuoteBasically the Spawn rate (Opposite of Release rate) is set at 17
For reference, this is equivalent to a release rate of 86. (To convert either SR or RR to the other, subtract it
from 103.)
I have 4 more improvements I'd like to share.
Gentle 25 ("The Crankshaft") has been improved to 1:17.18
The Crankshaft
I noticed that at the end of Proxima's solution, he had some blockers and diggers spare before the final pillar. There is a trick that can be used using those two skills to speed through the final pillar, bearing in mind that other diggers can free blockers. It is tough to execute though because there is a chance that the blockers can turn other lemmings around instead of the intended use of stopping diggers.
Gentle 31 ("Doomsday") has been improved to 0:35.88
Quirky 08 ("A Spot of Bother") has been improved to 0:52.35
Zany 01 ("The bridge is breaking down.") has been improved to 1:03.76
Gentle 21 improved to 21.29 [-1.18s]
Gentle 22 to 24.53 [-1.71s]
I got gentle 24 to the point where I believe it's provably completely optimal, the last lemming to exit simply walks straight from the entrance to the exit, with no jumping up or falling down to slow them. time: 1:04.53 (-1.23)
Quote from: Minim on December 17, 2020, 04:45:14 PM
the Spawn rate (Opposite of Release rate)
How is it opposite? I thought they were one and the same thing ???
Also, thanks for the explanation :lemcat:
Quote from: WillLem on December 17, 2020, 11:31:05 PMHow is it opposite? I thought they were one and the same thing ???
They measure the same thing, but are inverted respective to each other. Spawn Interval is the number of frames between two successive lemming releases, so a high SI = slow release = low RR.
Specifically, with the revised type of RR present in new-formats, SI = 103 - RR and vice versa.
Slight improvement to gentle 26, 52.71 (-0.64), better is definitely better here though
Another very small one for gentle 28, 1.09.29 (-0.50)
And one for gentle 30, 16.71 (-0.64)

Ah, of course - that makes sense! Thanks for explaining :lemcat:
So, in the example given by Minim, the RR would be

-17 (+ 103), then -19 (+103), then +1 for each consecutive Bomber
Plenty of improvements picked up by the community last night (Thanks once again!). I also optimised some more Lunatic & Manic levels yesterday, particularly Lunatic 12, which beats the two-minute mark. I also managed to take two frames off on Gentle 22 this morning, partially due to the overuse on floaters, but have to admire the creativity of the rescue stair from the exit platform. Nice job!
Here's my full list from yesterday, apparently in reverse order...
Lunatic 29: 3:11.65
Lunatic 15: 1:17.71
Lunatic 12: 1:57.71
Lunatic 11: 1:38.65
Lunatic 10: 1:46.47
Lunatic 9: 1:26.06
Manic 11: 1:31.65
Manic 6: 0:18.24
Manic 4: 0:55.65
Manic 3: 2:31.24
Did you see my other gentle solutions? Only some of the seem to have been added to the chart.
I managed to improve on Pooty's really good solution to Gentle 31 by half a second, new time 35.41 (-0.47)
Major improvement to Quirky 1, new time 27.47 (-10.00)
Huge improvement to Quirky 5, new time 1.22.27 (-40.44)
Quirky 6 -> 26.59 (-5.94)
Quirky 7 -> 2.21.12 (-2.64)
Another improvement to Zany 4 LEMTRIS, with a totally different solution this time - 01:16.65 (-8 seconds) :lemcat:
Also, Zany 11 LemMing ToMato KetchUp FAcilitY in 00:27.71 8-)
And finally, Manic 30 POOR WEE CREATURES in 01:41.53. I tried various different crowd control methods for the end section and always got this same result, so I'm fairly certain this is non-improvable (by me, at least) :P

Probably not, and I hope to do so eventually. Sorry, but I was busy last night, and so many contributors took part the night before. Do you know which level numbers I've left out? Checking to see if I've downloaded everything plus updating the table is quite a tough job.

Quirky 12 - 0.34.12 (-1.06)

Also gentle 31 record (35.41) needs adding to chart
Here's Zany 6 Compression Method 1 in 00:57.88 (-3 seconds) to bring it under the minute.
I had a go at the two 3-minute levels to see whether either could be brought under 3 minutes. No luck, but I did slightly improve the current records on both.
Good job, WillLem. However, I also had a go at Zany 6 today and managed a faster time: 0:55.59. New zip file containing my replay will be updated shortly.
My other improvements are:
Zany 5: 0:47.24
Manic 1: 0:58.12
Manic 3: 2:26.41
Manic 5: 0:46.59
Lunatic 3: 1:33.88
Lunatic 6: 0:39.65
For Zany 5, I went over the water this time. Gronkling's "Doomsday" two-lem speed building trick could be used here to speed the building here further.
The two lemming building trick was used in Pooty's solution so it's their advancement, I just improved on their containment method. It's definitely a useful technique if you have enough bashers and builders.
Some morning improvements
Quirky 17 - 1:17.41 (-1.00.88)
Quirky 18 - 2:02.41 (-6.71)
Quirky 19 - 1:07.82 (-29.18)
Quirky 20 - 0:27.29 (-1.47)
Quirky 21 - 0:59.24 (-13.35)
Quirky 22 - 2:09.35 (-19.77)
A few more improvements to other random levels from me this morning:
Zany 32: 2:01.35
Zany 31: 2:10.88
Lunatic 27: 0:31.41 (I've finally managed to backroute this level and ignore the parts below :P)
Lunatic 23: 0:50.24
Lunatic 22: 2:29.65
Manic 24: 2:12.53
Manic 13: 1:47.76 (The first time this level is beaten in 2 minutes. This was a real :forehead: moment. You don't always have to bash underneath the mouse trap... May not work on DOS however thanks to dodgy miner/right OWW mechanics.)
Quote from: Minim on December 22, 2020, 02:12:18 PMLunatic 27: 0:31.41 (I've finally managed to backroute this level and ignore the parts below :P)
Replay please? There is still time for this to be fixed :P
Sure. Here you go. :)
Well, that's a stumper. I must admit that I don't see any possible way to fix that, without really ugly hacks like putting fire objects on the terrain around the hatch, so I may just have to let you get away with that one :P
This trick could potentially be useful for any level involving an opposite facing exit, blockers, bashers and lots of spare builders. I used it to solve Lunatic 26 in just 52 seconds. 8-) Replay is attached to the zip file.
Other results this evening so far are:
Manic 26: 0:56.47 (Similar to the published solution but uses an extra blocker)
Zany 24: 0:35.88 (Because there are 100 lems and a 99 release rate I wanted to find a quicker way to let the last lemming reach the exit. I had to build towards the entrance but also needed to find a way redirect the builder towards the exit before the last lem arrives.)
I also fixed an error to Zany 25. The result is 1:04.94.
Finishing off quirky for the time being
Quirky 24 - 0:59.71 (-35.47)
Quirky 27 - 1:10.29 (-12.47)
Quirky 29 - 1:21.88 (-40.06)
Quirky 30 - 0:54.65 (-1.70)
Quirky 31 - 0:53.59 (-2.59)
Wow, Gronkling. By looking at those replays, well spotted backroute on Quirky 24. Should be a much easier one to fix I bet.
Also, a totally majestic solution to Quirky 30! I didn't think a basher could actually rise a pixel on the builder's stair while bashing close to the next wall. I don't think this trick will be easy to copy, :P but nonetheless a great spot indeed, and it's nice to see something different like this.
Along with the new year comes a major update for Redux levels. Unfortunately I decided it will be too tedious to write the full list and just update the table instead. :P The latest replays will always be at the top of the "Date Modified" column after being sorted. Some of the replays have also been updated to reduce clutter. Gronkling's replays that I've somewhat missed from Reply #13 have finally been added to the ZIP file. Enjoy the show!
I'm going to move on from Redux and focus on a different pack this year, although I'm not quite sure which one it will be yet. GeoffLems could be a strong contender, as WillLem published a full set of solutions there, although I also remember contributing to a bit of DoveLems too. Maybe I should go between the NL years and do LPIII? What's the next most popular "No-Longer-Updated" pack that will work best for this challenge?
OK, it appears nobody has any suggestions then. :-\
But anyway, after doing a Mass Replay Check on the updated version of Redux, it has been revealed that Gentle 32's "Going Their Separate Ways" has been replaced and the solution is no longer possible with the published replay. I have taken down the attachment file until we get a new conclusive replay for this level. The last time recorded (I think) was 0:51.65, so let's see if we can aim for (and hopefully beat) this time. I will also need to check the other updated levels and record any changes to results.

Thanks for doing this, Proxima. The table has been updated for you.
Only one level has been improved with the update, Zany 6. The time so far is 0:47.06, an eight second difference. Thanks to the lower save requirement the number of methods open up a little bit.

I've updated the OP again, changing the link to the corresponding Redux pack (Which is now but temporarily on the NL Main board) and updating info there. Now that Ichotolot's NeoLemmix Introduction Pack is added to the main download, I'm also planning to include results for them.
Edit: I forgot to mention this: :forehead: With the new update changing the nuke mechanics, I might occasionally press nuke before all required lemmings reach the exit, leaving me short of the requirement. I'll need to look at the Mass Replay Check again just in case. If my replays affect any of these levels, fixing should be relatively straightforward.

Mechanics have not changed. All that's changed is that you can assign a hotkey to "skip back 5 seconds, nuke, skip forward 5 seconds" so as to start nuking immediately. If you choose not to assign a hotkey to this, nothing has changed at all.
One thing that
has changed, though, is "Quest for Kieran", which is now accurate to the DOS level layout, even though that makes it a tad easier on NL, since DOS builders have a weird asymmetry that makes them less good at stretching to the left. Here's a solution in 38.94.
Just a heads-up: today's update to Redux (which should be the very final update, unless major bugs are discovered that require fixing) has changed a few levels, and in particular, the decisions about which way the trapdoors should face will affect time records. It's probably best to mark these levels with an asterisk so that we don't lose information about what the old record was, but a new record still counts even if it's worse, as the old one may not be matchable. (However, on some levels, the trapdoor flipping may make an even lower time possible!)
Affected levels are:
Gentle 5 "You need bashers this time" (skillset)
Gentle 8 "Snuggle up to a lemming"
Quirky 12 "Over the wall"
Quirky 13 "Haunted botanical garden"
Quirky 21 "The Long Way Around"
Zany 20 "Dolly Dimple"
Manic 18 "The gate trap Lemmings"
Lunatic 10 "Be more than just a number"
Lunatic 16 "SEGA Four"
Lunatic 17 "Creature Discomforts"
Lunatic 24 "Everyone's a hard nut" (slight terrain difference; unlikely to affect time records)
OK Thanks! :) I've taken down the Redux replays and I will download the updated version and have a look at these changed levels.
Must mention before I forget: The old Gentle 5 solution is hilarious to watch with the new update. :D
Right. I made a full list of updated time records yesterday, and I'll soon gather these new replays into the file and upload the folder in the OP again. Here they are, with hints in spoiler tags.
Spoiler
Gentle 5: 0:36.41. I went a slightly different way to finish by walking over the first part of the grid and then bashing down.
Gentle 8: 0:18.35. This was a relatively straightforward improvement, not that I could physically pull it off though. After seeing the solution I removed the blocker and re-assigned all the lems in the appropriate frames with a text editor.
Quirky 12: 0:33.88. The old replay was another one that started with an instant blocker. I realised that if any replay creates this sort of situation, I can just simply use the text editor to remove the blocker and repeat the process of reducing frames for every skill assignment. This replay is trickier because it does has a few RR changes; so I'll need to check the SPAWNED count, but I don't think that would've affected anything else too badly.
Quirky 13: I was able to pull off the exact same time; just assigned the right side digger earlier.
Quirky 21: 0:56.53. Simply took 46 frames off every assignment here. Must admire the lovely solution too.
Zany 20: 0:46.88 (13 seconds better than the original :o) Once I figured out who was able to do what, I simply assigned the worker for the first lemming.
Manic 18: 1:01.41. I went a different way and ended up saving much more time! The time could be optimised even further to accommodate crowd release, but it could be a hassle, particularly with how many lems you'll need in the digger's pit.
Lunatic 10: 1:39.18. As well as optimising the frames, I was able to move the starting point of the crowd release builder at least 1 pixel to the right so that it doesn't bump into the wall unlike last time round.
Lunatic 16: 1:46.12. More frame reduction editing here.
Lunatic 17: 1:10.00. Like Manic 18, this level still needs RR optimising to put the climbers in the same place, but otherwise I think this is the fastest way to get them home.
Congratulations! Good to know the old records were able to be matched or surpassed in all cases but one.

Replay is the one from Gronkling's post (https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=5200.msg88606#msg88606) on the first page.
"No added colours or lemmings"... 48.06 seconds.
Not as ground-breaking, but I managed to shave about a second off "The Great Lemming Caper" (49.35) - also a talisman solution.
That Lunatic 4 solution of yours was, in a word, INCREDIBLE! How you managed to keep the two climbers is absurd. I'll see if I can copy that miner blocker trick in other levels though. :P
As for 23, that was a classic oversight. Good job. I've put both records into my document and I'll update the thread for you.
Thank you for the kind (and big!) word. I think it might be the first backroute ever for that level (although the precision required may mean it doesn't really count as one).
Also got a solution for Anxiety... 1:27.18
Improved it further... 1:20.71
Chill Out - 15.41
Let's get together - 51.71
Thanks, Crane. I also made several small improvements to levels, mostly optimising to save the exact requirement; However, some others, such as "Tension Sheet" Quirky 29, which had a "Random Generator" effect on release, which can be annoying sometimes but I found this one quite fun. Replay attached is the "1:18.18" solution, which takes three seconds off! It's nice to come back every once in a while with your memory refreshed. :D
I am also going to add the NeoLemmix Introduction Pack results under a separate attachment. It's been two weeks since I submitted my replays to Ichotolot on the main thread. I still haven't seen him commentate on my replays yet, but if he gets back to me and considers swapping levels then I'll rename my replays accordingly. The same goes with any backroute fixes that I may have found.
I've reordered the packs in the OP. For NeoLemmix challenge topics, I would like to keep packs in a consistent order: Redux first, then Original Lemmings (for challenges where this has been covered), then other packs in alphabetical order by author.
Thanks, Proxima. I agree that Redux should be listed first.
Also, as you mentioned Original Lemmings, I noticed that you've sorted out that level pack ready for challenges again!
Not quite. Several of the sub-packs are pretty much done now (L1, ONML, Covox, Prima, SMS, PSP, 2P and Miscellaneous Levels); Genesis and Holiday are well under way; NES will take a while because I want to play through the actual NES version so I can check how accurate the conversions are; I haven't started on L2 or the ZX Spectrum levels. But yes, the conversions as a whole are coming along 8-)
Here's Hunt The Nessy in 3:58.94. Building over Nessy appears to be the fastest solution. This was optimised down from 4:07.XX, which involved bashing through Nessy instead.
This was played in the new L1 conversion (https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=4900.msg90861#msg90861).
The race against cliches - 2:05.24
Change up the timings a bit and this can be a zero Floater solution too.
This can be done a few seconds faster in the Oh Noi More Lemmings version due to the direction of the trapdoor.
Good work. I have optimised the floaters and RR to improve that time to 2:04.47.
This may be opening the floodgates, but I have released solutions to the NeoLemmix Introduction Pack at the top of this thread. Good luck with these!
I was aware about the major update to the NeoLemmix Introduction Pack, and have updated the table with new results. I also made a few more optimisations to older levels, all are listed at the top of the page.
The door is still open BTW if anybody has any suggestions for Level Packs, especially those with multiple solutions to levels, and also those including the new skills (Laserer and Slider) if anybody's interested!
Hi all, I'm new to this channel.
A few questions about these time trials:
- Those are for NeoLemmix on PC, so you can pause etc.?
- Do you need the talisman in order to succeed? Or is the normal quest good enough?
My record for Manic (14) - Come over to my place (without talisman), is 34.12s instead of 34.53s. How to 'prove' it?
Thank you!
All NL quality-of-life features, including pausing, are fine to use. All NL challenges (unless specifically stated otherwise) require just the normal solution, not any talismans.
You can prove your result by saving a replay, by pressing the "save replay" hotkey (U by default) either after the last skill assignment, or on the postview screen.
NL has automatic replay-saving turned on by default, so you may have a replay already -- look inside Replay/Auto/Lemmings_Redux inside your NL folder.
Thanks for the swift reply!
