I actually used to include polls with almost all of the threads I created on my main forum. When I couldn't think of a poll related to the subject, I just made up an unrelated one. At some point I even started compiling the results from all the different polls in a spreadsheet. :P I stopped including polls at some point because I deemed them distracting from the intention I was creating the thread with.

In all seriousness: polls can be useful, but they can also be distracting. They definitely shouldn't be in every topic, but there's definitely use cases where they're a good option (good examples: many topics in Bugs and Suggestions).
