Title: Lemmings 3D problems
Post by: Clam on December 09, 2010, 02:44:21 AM
I finally got L3D working in DOSBox (edit: not really ), but I still have a couple of problems:

EDIT: 0. I can play the training levels, but I can't play Fun and onwards. When I try to access the level menu, the screen just goes black.

1. How do you skip the intro movie? It's quite long and I don't want to have to wait for it to play through every time I start the game.

2. How do you get sound effects to work? I can get music, but in the options menu the other sounds are set to minimum (which I presume means zero) and it won't let me change them. ???

I'm able to click out of the intro video (once the music starts playing).  There are several opening credits screens after that that I cannot skip.

I also don't have any problems with the sound effects.  But then, I'm running the program on an old rinky-dink Gateway PC from circa 1993, which I've kept for so many years solely so I can play Lemmings on it.

OH NO! :XD:

I can play the practice levels, but when I try to play Fun (and I'd guess Tricky-Mayhem do the same), the screen just goes black and nothing happens. For whatever reason, I didn't think to try that before posting about these relatively trivial issues... :'(

Okay, I just got L3D set up on my other computer (running Windows XP) using DOSBox.  I originally ran into all of the same problems that you did, but after I did a little tinkering, it appears to be working fine.

Take note that I am running L3D off of a CD-ROM, so if you've got the game stored on some other medium, these suggestions might not apply.

There are two files that the game writes to your hard drive, and it won't function properly without them.  One of them is a configuration file, which contains your graphics and sound card information from the setup utility.  Without this file, the music and/or sound effects won't play properly.

The second file is a save file, which keeps track of your in-game progress.  This file is created the first time you play the game, and is read whenever you play a non-practice level.  If the game can't read this file, you won't be able to play any levels other than practice levels.

The problem is the game cannot write these files if the C:\ drive is not mounted in DOSBox.  So what I did was I created a directory on my computer to store the files in and mounted it to the C:\ drive in DOSBox.  The game will then write its files to this directory.  The only other thing to do is to make sure to mount this directory to DOSBox every time you start the game so that it can read the files.

I hope this helps.  ;)

Forgot to mention, I am running it off the CD, and on Windows XP.

I still can't skip the intro, but other than that, it seems to work perfectly! Thank you very much, LemSteven!

You're welcome.  I'm glad you got it working!   8)

As for the intro, I've noticed that it doesn't seem to let you skip the intro the first time you play the game.  Once I've played it once, I'm able to skip it with a left-click.

:o You're right, I can skip it now... and there I was about to suggest some hack like replacing the intro video with a blank file :D. I guess it checks for a save file and prevents skipping if you don't have one, so you have to watch the movie through at least once. Slightly devious

Thanks again!

I wonder if this would be good information to include in the wiki?

It certainly would be a good idea to provide instructions for how to make games work - else any other info on the games is kinda moot :P. Just don't go too far and turn it into a tech support site ;). We could just provide the minimal instructions (how to set up the directories and what to type into DOSBox to make it run) and then refer readers to the forums if they have other problems.

Clicking never worked for me, but I was able to hold spacebar as it loads to skip the opening screens. CD-ROM version, again.
